Re: Reduction in Anaemia Prevalence Through Implementation of IFA Supplementation Through ICDS Scheme

The data presented in the research communication is interesting particularly when the results have been obtained by implementing the research by utilizing the Anganwadi Workers, the most peripherral honarary Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) functionary at the village level.

It is well known that in Uttar Pradesh for last five years, there are six to seven rounds of pulse polio immunization are being carried out.During each round which is undertaken for about 15 days in a month (which excludes 15 days of preparation)i.e. entire months. The anganwadi workers undertake no other activities except participation in pulse polio immunization programme.

To achieve the supplementation of IFA tablets twice weekly in 89% of children and daily in 64% of children is an extraordinary efforts of the supervisors who monitored the supplemention of IFA. The data of the research communications becomes more interesting when the angwanwadis open only for 300 days in a year for all the ICDS activities.

The findings of the present study needs to be replicated in unsupervised conditions before the results can be extrapolated.
