Blood pressure was measured in 684 girls ranging in age from 11 to 18 years at a government secondary girls' school. The study showed a gradual rise in the mean diastolic and systolic pressures with increasing age. There was a significant difference in the mean systolic and diastolic pressures of the girls aged 1115 compared with those aged 1618. Hypertension defined as systolic and/or diastolic pressures greater than two standard deviations above the mean pressures was found in 6.8 per cent of the study population.
