The estimate of mean birth weight of Iraqi children is based on measurements taken from a sample of district hospitals and one specialist hospital from Southern Iraq. Investigation was confined to 1,170 singleton births occurring to mothers who had no obvious complications during their antenatal period. The mean birth weight was found to be 3.32±0.41 kg(males=3.38±0.46 kg and females=3.26±0.33kg). The difference in mean birth weights between males and females was found to be statistically significant. The birth weight was found to increase consistently with parity up to five and with age of the mother up to 36 years. Birth weight was significantly higher for babies of the nonconsanguinous parents.
