Serum DDT levels measured as pp'DDE, op'DDT and pp'DDT was determined in three groups of urban non-occupationally exposed individuals living in Sã Paulo. The serum DDT levels were above the ones previously reported in the literature. Adult female subjects presented the highest levels. Data from the newborn group revealed limited placental transfer with preservation of the relation pp'DDT/pp'DDE found in the maternal blood. In young female children the relative increase in the proportion of pp'DDT suggests recent exposure. The high serum levels of DDT and its compounds observed in our group of non-occupationally exposed individuals seems to indicate heavy contamination of the human food-chain.
