Milk Intolerance Among Iranian School Children

MAHIN SADRE, M.D. and HOSSEIN GHASSEMI, Phm.D., M.P.H.

Institute of Nutrition Sciences and Food Technology P.O. Box 3234, Tehran, Iran

The ability of 101 healthy children, ranging in age from 7 to 12 years, to tolerate milk, was investigated with regular lactose-containing and lactose-hydrolyzed milk in a double blind study. Twenty-five children, 12 milk intolerant and 13 tolerant, were tested for lactose tolerance (LTT) after ingestion of 40–50 g of lactose. Fourteen (14%) of the subjects developed symptoms suggestive of milk intolerance after drinking regular milk, but none of the children complained of symptoms after consumption of lactose-hydrolyzed milk. Fifteen (60%) of 25 children tested for lactose tolerance (LTT) manifested clinical symptoms after ingestion of a test dose of lactose. Twenty (80%) of 25 subjects did not absorb lactose and had a flat blood glucose curve. However, the rate of lactose malabsorption in 7 to 10 and 11 to 12 year olds was 64% vs. 100% respectively.
