Data from a nutrition survey indicate that the nutrition status of a preschool child based on weight-for-height is associated with the presence of recent symptoms of illness, fever, and diarrhea. Weight and stature measurements were obtained on 5,400 Haitian children ages 359 months, who were representative of the national under-5 population. Recent illness, fever, and diarrhea histories were obtained from the child's mother. Children with weight-for-height less than 2.0 z-score values had nearly double the prevalence of symptoms compared to those between ±1.0 z-score. This association did not hold when the prevalence of symptoms was compared to low height-for-age.
