Measuring The Recovery Rates of Malnourished Children from their Weight-gains

PART I: REVIEW OF EXISTING METHODS

IAN MCDOWELL and DAVID CLAYDEN

Department of Community Health, University of Nottingham

The quality of treatment given to children suffering from Protein-Calorie Malnutrition is often evaluated by measuring the rate of weight gained during recovery. Accordingly, the weights of children attending malnutrition clinics in many countries are routinely recorded. Nevertheless the estimation of recovery rates from the weights presents certain difficulties, and many of the existing approaches are shown to be inadequate when applied to a group of 360 Ugandan children recovering from malnutrition (Part I).

In the second part of the report an alternative index of recovery rate based on weight-gains is outlined, and a computer program for analysing such data is presented.
