Serological Assessments of Streptococcal Infection by Comparison of Antibody Titres to Streptococcal Extracellular Antigens

M. S. El-Khateeb

Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Medicine University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan

Antibody titres were measured against extracellular products of group A streptococci viz. antistreptolysin O (ASO), antideoxyribonuclease-B (ADN-B), antinicotinamide adenine dinncleotidase (ANAD), antihyaluronidase (AH), and antistreptokinase (ASK) in addition to streptozyme, in the sera of patients infected with streptococci or in its sequale, and in healthy blood donors. ASO test was found to detect larger number of cases of rheumatic fever (84 per cent) while ADN-B detected more cases of acute glomerulonephriteis (92 per cent). ADN-B can detect elevated titres in larger number of healthy population in comparison to the other single tests. For the determination of streptococcal infection it is necessary to determine three antibodies, i.e. ASO, ADN-B, and any one of the others simultaneously, and if two out of the three are positive, diagnosis of recent infection can be made.
