Attained Weight for Age Decile Positions and Selected Background Factors Among Infants in Istanbul

Tahire Koctürk, Ph.D

Department of Pediatrics, St Göran's Children's Hospital S-112 81 Stockholm, Sweden

Weight and length measurements of 263 infants living in three socio-economically distinct districts in Istanbul were interpreted in terms of weight for age decile positions and the influence of selected background variables such as the infant's age, maternal background and sanitary conditions upon attained growth position were analysed using the analysis of variance method. Infants living in tbe high socioeconomic district attained significantly higher weight for age positions. Infants living in tbe middle and low socioeconomic districts attained growth at or below the fortieth centile under conditions which affected a discontinuation of exclusive breast feeding and/ or which increased tbe risks for infections.
