Neonatal Listeriosis–Report of Nine Cases from Kuwait

Rita Dhar, MD

Department of Laboratories Al-Adan Hospital PO Box 46969, 64020 Fahaheel, Kuwait

During a period of 18 months (February 1985 through July 1986) nine cases of Listeria monocytogenes infection were encountered among neonates admitted to or born at Al-Adan Hospital. In the previous 5 years L. monocytogenes had never been isolated from neonates or adults in our hospital. Of the nine cases, five presented with the disease at the time of birth while the other four cases developed symptoms at the age of 3–8 days. All except two patients of the early onset group died while all of late onset group survived. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from the genital tracts of four mothers of early onset cases of listeriosis. The source of community acquired infection among mothers remains unknown.
