Twenty-one cases of abdominal swelling in neonates (aged between 1 day and 28 days) were reviewed. In five cases there was history of obstructed labour with four requiring caesarian section. The causes of abdominal swelling were as follows: renal masses, ten; both bladder and renal masses, five; ascites, five; and ectopic kidney, one. Ascites was due to renal disease in two and posterior urethral valves in three. The causes of renal mass were hydronephrosis secondary to posterior urethral valves in nine; renal dysplasia in two; and congenital mesoblastic nephroma in one.
