Plasma Alkaline Phosphatase and Osteoblastic Activity in Sickle Cell Anaemia
Department of Clinical Pathology, College of Medicine Lagos, Nigeria
Plasma heat-labile alkaline phosphatase which originates mainly from the osteoblasts was measured in sickle cell anaemia, haemoglobin phenotype SS. The patients had high levels of the enzyme both in crisis and in the steady state. The level of the heat-labile alkaline phosphatase indicates severity of bone damage and is a useful guide of progress in the management of bone pains in sickle cell anaemia.
