Recording of Birthweight Range by Traditional Birth Attendants (Dais) in Villages in Northern India

Birthweight range was determined by 58 illiterate TBAs in 1185 babies born in 28 villages in North India. They made use of three different coloured tapes pasted on the dial of the portable weighing balance to identify (i) normal babies, (ii) those needing special care at home and, (iii) babies needing referral to the hospital. The correlation was 97.6 per cent in 533 babies where comparison was made between the range and the exact birthweights. This study demonstrates that even illiterate health workers can help in the identification of ‘at risk’ newborns by using this low cost improvised technology.
