Sudden Death in Measles and its Relationship to Serum Enzyme and Electrocardiographic Changes

M. A. W. Wooldridge, MBBS, MRCP(UK)

Department of Paediatrics, King Abdul Aziz Military Hospital Tabuk, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Fourteen Saudi Arabian children with measles bronchopneumonia and 9 with non-measles bronchopneumonia were studied. Two of the measles patients died suddenly on the day of admission. The serum Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH), {alpha}-Hydroxybutyrate Dehydrogenase (HBDH), Liver Lactate Dehydrogenase (LLDH), Creatinine Kinase (CK), Aspartate Amino-Transferase (AST), Alanine Amino-Transferase (ALT) were recorded on admission and repeated four days later. The levels of LDH, HBDH and LLDH were significantly elevated (P<0.0Ol) in the measles patients including those that died at admission, returning to normal values 4 days later (P>0.05). ECG abnormalities were recorded in 57 per cent of patients on admission and in 21 per cent on day 4. This study suggests that there may have been a causal relationship between the measles virus, the myocardium and sudden death.
