A study of 113 Gambian mothers at different stages of lactation for subjective assessment of breast milk output revealed a positive correlation between lactational performance and maternal estimation of that performance. The method is suitable for screening mothers with low lactational performance in a community where test weighing is not available. However the sensitivity and specificity of the method are low.
