Nutritional Status of Children with Pyogenic Meningitis
*Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Natal
The nutritional status of black children with pyogenic meningitis was investigated over a 2 year period. Of the 2.7 per cent of children with pyogenic meningitis admitted to the children's wards, 30 per cent were malnourished, which was no different from the prevalence of malnutrition in the community at large. About a third of the children with pneumococcal, meningococcal and unknown meningitis were mal nourished; whereas 17 per cent and 53 per cent of those with Haemophilus influenzae and gram -ve meningitis respectively were malnourished. The mortality in the malnourished children with meningitis was significantly higher (54 per cent) than in the well-nourished children (25 per cent).
