A household survey of 151 families in an urban slum near Lahore (Pakistan) revealed a high preference for sons over daughters. Boys were better nourished than girls and had a lower prevalence of growth failure. During illness parents incurred expense to seek health care for boys more often than for girls. There was a trend for higher mortality amongst girls and more significantly in the age group 1-2 years.
