There have been no previous reports of cystic fibrosis in Iran. An intensive search for detection of cystic fibrosis was made between July 1975 to December 1979. Pilocarpine iontophoresis was performed on 125 suspected patients and 20 controls from Fars Province of Southern Iran. Only three patients were found to have cystic fibrosis on the basis of the clinical findings, repeated elevations of sweat chloride levels and evidence of pancreatic insufficiency. A 20 year retrospective review of case notes from our 3 university hospitals, totalling 750 beds, did not reveal a single patient with a firm diagnosis of cystic fibrosis. We did find records of four newborns with meconium ileus. It is thus concluded that cystic fibrosis is present but rare in Iran.
