One hundred and ten children from 6 months to 6 years of age suffering from protein energy malnutrition (PEM) were studied for radiological changes in the bones of hands, wrists and ankles. Thirty age matched healthy children served as control. Osteoporosis of the bones was the most striking observation in 75.4 percent cases. Another interesting finding was cystic spaces in the shafts of metacarpal bones (12.7 per cent) which has not been reported so far in relation to PEM. These changes showed direct correlation with the severity of PEM. Other radiological changes included transverse lines of arrested growthTL (54 per cent), frank rachitic changes (5.4 per cent), ground glass appearance (3.6 per cent) and ringed epiphyses (7.2 per cent). All these changes were inversely proportionate to the severity of PEM except for the TL.
