Total serum protein, albumin, and globulin were measured in 125 healthy, normal full-term Nigerian neonates and their mothers. The mean values of total serum protein, albumin and globulin in the male newborn were 64.3 g/l, 44.9 g/l and 18.8 g/l respectively, which were not significantly different from the levels in female babies of 62.5, 45.3 and 17.2 g/l respectively. Compared with their mothers the Nigerian neonates had lower levels of total serum protein, lower levels of globulins but higher albumin/globulin ratio.
The high serum globulins and low serum albumin considered characteristic of the adult Negro are not present at birth.
