A Nutritional Study of Under-Fives in Eastern Rwanda

ANDREW CANT, B.SC, M.R.C.P. 1, MICHAEL GOULD, M.B., B.S. 2, O. G. BROOKE, M.D., F.R.C.P. 3 and RICHARD ROWLAND, B.A., M.B.B.S 4

Institute of Child Health and the Hospital for Sick Children Great Ormond Street, London, W.C.1

Heights and weights were measured in 800 underfives in Eastern Rwanda. 247 (31 %) were stunted and 12 (1.5%) were wasted. Stunting appeared to be due to inadequate breast feeding and weaning foods. We suggest failure to measure children's height leads to an underestimate of malnutrition in the Third World Countries, and we provide evidence to support the value of specially prepared weaning supplements.
