The contracture patterns in poliomyelitis seen at the Polio Clinic of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria between 1968 and 1977 are described. 513 children had appreciable contractures requiring treatment. 320 were male and 193 female. The peak incidence was in the second year of life but decreased with age. The youngest patient was eight months old. The contracture occurred mostly in the tensor fascia lata, hamstrings and tendo-achilles. These contractures led to crawling; and permanent crippling. With treatment of contractures and use of walking aids in form of knee cage, calipers, crutches and sticks, the children were able to become independent and learn an occupation.
