Ascaris and Malnutrition in a Group of Brazilian ChildrenA Follow-up Study
Departamento de Medicina Social, Faculdade de Medicina da UFPel Pelotas-RS-Brazil
A course of mebendazole was given to a group of 165 children 18 years of age in a rural area of Brazil considered to be critical both for ascariasis and malnutrition. Comparison of this group with another group of 172 untreated children did not reveal any differences in the nutritional status at the end of a period of 10 months. In addition, when analysed on an individual basis, fluctuations in egg counts for Ascaris did not maintain any significant relationship to changes in the nutritional status.
Ascariasis by itself can thus not be considered a causal factor of malnutrition, in an area such as ours.
