Some of the experiences with the use of expressed breast milk in a developing country are presented. An average of about 3/4 litre a day could be collected from the postnatal wards. 64.2% of the samples were sterile, 26.3% grew non-pathogenic organisms and 9.5% potential pathogens. Practical guidelines are suggested for the use of human milk in developing countries where conventional milk banks are non-existent. In general, in such centres, collection under supervision, rapid consumption and minimal storage seem preferable. Recently we have used raw EBM stored in the refrigerator for the night feeds without any obvious ill effects.
