Outbreak of Multiple Drug-Resistant Salmonella Havana Originating in Pediatric Wards of Two Hospitals in Shiraz, Iran—In vitro Susceptibility Patterns

EMIL H. MAKAREM, Ph.D., Assistant Professor

Dept. of Pathology, School of Medicine, Pahlavi University Shiraz, Iran

An outbreak of Salmonella havana involving forty-four children at Kotbeddine and Saadi Pediatric Wards is presented. Salmonella havana outbreak was confirmed by culture isolation and biochemical and serological studies. Two patients showed clinical signs of septicemia and the organism was isolated from blood and urine respectively.

In vitro susceptibility studies were done using chloramphenicol, tetracycline, gentamicin, ampicillin, kanamycin, cephalothin and trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole. The strains were found to be highly resistant to all the antibiotics except trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Only fourteen (32%) were sensitive to cephalothin and six (14%) to gentamicin with a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1.6 and >3.1 ug per ml respectively.
