Plasma Ascorbic Acid Levels in Nigerian Mothers and Newborn
Medical School, University College Hospital Ibadan, Nigeria
The values of plasma ascorbic acid were determined in forty paired maternal and fetal blood collected randomly from women who were booked for antenatal care and delivery at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. The mean ascorbic acid level in the fetal plasma was 0.824 mg. per 100ml. (S.D. = ±0.173). This was significantly higher than the mean value of 0.662 mg. per 100 ml. (S.D. = ±0.130) found in the corresponding maternal plasma (p < 0.001). The fetal plasma ascorbic acid level was correlated to the maternal plasma level (r =0.532; p < 0.001). However, further statistical analysis suggest that other factors besides, the maternal ascorbic acid level may influence the level of ascorbic acid found in the fetus.
