Beneficial Effects of Oral Electrolyte-Sugar Solutions in the Treatment of Children's Diarrhoea
1. Studies in Two Ambulatory Care Clinics
We report on nearly 2000 episodes of diarrhoea in ambulatory children under five years treated with an oral rehydration solution of electrolytes and sugar (ORS), together with early institution of feeding. The results observed were.
- 1. The incidence of dehydration due to insufficient intake after one year of intensive use of ORS was reduced.
- 2. Weight gain occurred both across an average episode and, for part of the study, over a several month period; children with prolonged bouts of diarrhoea seemed especially protected from weight loss.
- 3. Non-specific anti-diarrhoeal drugs provided no added benefit to use of ORS.
- 4. Though use of ORS with glucose was associated with a somewhat shorter duration of diarrhoea compared to ORS with sucrose, the clinical outcomes were not significantly different.
- 5. ORS may be used widely and safely.
