The nutritional status, as determined by anthropometry, of 1074 preschool children was measured in a six week survey of a small area of Southern Rwanda, central Equatorial Africa. Little evidence of low weight for height, clinical signs of P.E.M. or reduced arm circumference was found, but a proportion with marked reduction in height for age was seen at every age. The risks of being stunted in this population are discussed.
