Measuring The Recovery Rates of Malnourished Children from their Weight-gains

PART II: DISCUSSION OF A NEW TECHNIQUE

IAN MCDOWELL and DAVID CLAYDEN

Department of Community Health, University of Nottingham

The first part of this paper outlined weaknesses in existing methods for estimating the recovery rates of malnourished children. This second part contains a description of a technique capable of overcoming these weaknesses, and presents data illustrating its use. Practical aspects of using weight gains to reflect nutritional progress are discussed, and the need for estimating regional standards for recovery rates is emphasized. A computer program has been developed capable of calculating such standards, and this is described.
